Sopron Wine Region
One of the most ancient wine regions of Hungary, the Sopron lies on the foothills of the Alps in the north-western corner of the country. For centuries, the city of Sopron itself enjoyed thriving trade and, surprisingly, until the 18th century Sopron was reputedly the largest wine trading centre in central Europe. Sopron is a potentially fine wine region, where the Kékfrankos grape is most famous, although the quality in the vineyard and the bottle could and should be significantly superior to the light, everyday-drinking wines that are commonplace in this region. Although essentially a red wine region, Sopron does also produce some interesting whites.

Franz Reinhard Weninger, born in 1979, grew up on his parents' wine estate in central Burgenland, Austria, only a few kilometres from the lake Ferto, close enough to the wine. In Horitschon he not only learned the art of making wine from his father, but in doing so also discovered his great passion. After graduating from enology school in Klosterneuburg, he did internships at Schloss Sallegg (Italy), Kendall-Jackson's Vinwood Cellars, California (USA), and the Mundrakoona Estate (Australia). In 2000, having come closer to wine, he sought the geographic proximity and took over as enological and organizational director of the Balf estate near Sopron.
The unique touch to his wine comes from bringing together the forces of nature. Franz Reinhard Weninger only intervenes if absolutely necessary. He tries to enhance the natural processes in the vineyard and the wine cellar, not to implement radical changes. In this way he manages to draw the soil characteristics, the terroir, into the wine as purely and as simply as possible. The Weninger family had already been operating according to strict principles for quite some time, since 2006 the biodynamic method of cultivation at the winery in Balf has been monitored by Biokontroll Ungarn.

Sopron Wine Region is situated near to Lake Ferto, so humidity is relatively high which influences grape growing. Grape has been grown and wine has been made here since Celtic times. Following his parents’ traditions the young Kurt Taschner has established one of the largest winery of the region. In the beginning he assisted his father in bottling, later on he developed his winemaker knowledge and he still is learning it. Now he works together with his father, manages his professional team and takes an active part in wine marketing and wine tourism of the winery. In the 16-hectare vineyard many different kind of grape varieties are grown, such as: Kekfrankos (Blue Frankish), Zweigelt, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Irsai Oliver, Gruner Veltliner and Zenit. Taschner Wine House itself is located on the hillside above the town of Sopron, including the cellar, the bottling facilities and the wine shop, where visitors can taste the winery’s fine wines and extraordinary champagne.
