Matra Wine Region is located about 80 kilometres from Budapest, capitol of Hungary on the southern slopes of the Matra Mountain range in Northern Hungary. Encompassing approximately 7.800 hectares of vine growing area, Matra is Hungary's second largest wine region and the country's largest exporter of Hungarian wine with approximately 40% of total exports. Winegrowing and viniculture in the Matra region was established prior to the arrival of the Magyars (Hungarians) in the Carpathian Basin and the first written accounts referring to winemaking date back to the 11th century. The Matra Mountains with their moderate climate and protected areas provide perfect growing conditions for the local vineyards. Full-bodied whites grown on the volcanic soil dominate in this area.
