In the north of Hungary is renowned for elegant reds, in particular its Bikaver (Bull's Blood) blends. Recent wine laws also established the new Bikaver Superior label, for the very best of these historical blends. The more northerly latitude means they may not have the body of reds from more southerly regions such as Villany, but they have an elegance and complexity that has drawn comparisons with Burgundy. Certainly an increasing amount of Pinot Noir is now being grown there.

Nimrod Kovacs was born in Budapest, Hungary where he lived until in his early 20's. He then immigrated to the United States, where he worked in many fields including marketing, advertising, and telecommunications.

During Nimrod's diverse and extensive career, he travelled the world studying and tasting fine wines, and observing the unique characteristics of that particular terrior and the finesse and elegance of world class wines. Nimrod realized that Hungarian wines which were once highly revered and respected, were now in desperate need of a revival. After the fall of communist in 1989, this revival has started in all key historic wine regions of Hungary, including the Eger Wine Region, which is where the Kovacs Nimrod Winery is located.

Kovacs Nimrod Winery was fortunate to acquire 10 hectares in the region's finest vineyard, located atop the city's 'sacred hill', Nagy Eged. This area has unique soil characteristics that are comparable to Burgundy and Northern Rhone and allow varietals such as Furmint, Kekfrankos, Syrah and Pinot Noir to thrive. Kovacs Nimrod Winery, aside from producing Furmint and Chardonnay mainly focuses on red varietals such as Kékfrankos (Blaufrankisch), Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. In carefully selecting which varietals the winery will use, the objective is to create wines that represent the best aspects of the region as well as hold their own in a very competitive international market. The grapes used are harvested by hand and processed promptly in order to maximize juice quality. At Kovacs Nimrod Winery this is an art of passion, where taking the extra time and being selective has led to amazing wines that Nimrod is proud to call his own.
